1st April 2017 Grand Bonanza Extravaganza.
Fun thrills and Fireworks was the theme for the day at Fantasy Island. The 1st April marked the beginning of the Fantasy Island season. Unlike the tradition, Fantasy Island did not offer £5 wristbands on the first day of it season along with a firework display. Instead they left it a few weeks in – making the ride availability even better than it normally would be, and let us talk you through that!
Usually when Fantasy Island opens on the first day they are open for 12 hours straight, followed by a firework display. During this time the rides are usually plagued with downtime or closures as they are not used to being constantly ran for this period as they’ve been stood closed all winter – which is completely understandable. Because they have only been open weekends to start with some rides have been rotation and have been closing at 4pm outside. This has given them chance to have a proper run in before the main season kicks off. I’m happy to report this worked successfully and there was not a single breakdown on the 1st April 2017!
In terms of operations that day I can’t even fault find with it! It was blowing a gale and to everyone’s amazement they were sending Odyssey round in the morning before the park opens to get it tested. I genuinely did not expect it to open but they got it going for 10:30am sharp along with all the other rides and attractions.
Despite the breezy weather the crowds still turned up – although the inside was more packed than the out! Probably people having their first look around the newly refurbished Pyramid. Now, Fantasy Island did not have the £5 wristband offer on for the day however they had something even better in my opinion. 100% free I-Card credit with every wristband bought. Basically, if your wristband costs £22 you get £22 on an I-Card for free, we had about £70 between us! This paid for arcade games, Bowling and Lava Creek Golf – for free! We even tried out one of the VIP lanes on the Bowling, because… well it would be rude not to! Let me say we was not disappointed, it has been well thought about and the projectors skilfully hidden – see for yourself!
People were really taking advantage of the free credit and the games stalls inside were packed and people walking around the park all day with large prizes they had won previously! It was great to see people having such a good time and hey, the rain even held off!
Now on to the Fireworks! The outdoor rides and attractions closed at 8:10pm ready for the Fireworks. Previously the display has lasted around 4 or 5 minutes. This one lasted nearly 10 minutes and was incredible compared to other displays we have previously at the park! We even commented on the number of fireworks we could see from Millennium a few hours before the display had started! Enough of us talking, take a look for yourself!
All in all the day was fantastic and it’s amazing to see how the new owners are really utilizing the parks space with the positioning of the new rides and the amount of effort that has gone into them – they really do look like permanent rides. Even the little touches outside such as the trees which have been added around the site and games stalls becoming themed has really improved the experience of the park. A top day and if the ‘Summer Fireworks’ are anything like this we’ll have a treat to look forward to!
We’d also like to say thank you to everyone who joined us for live updates and streams throughout the day!
